Salmon price fails to lift as heavy harvest volumes flood market

Full trucks and flat prices, exporters face another tough week.

“Today you can buy fish at NOK 73.00 ($7.30/€6.50) in Oslo, NOK 71.00 ($7.10/€6.32) to the farmer, for 3+ size. There are full trucks being packed today and Thursday. There is fish everywhere,” a buyer tells SalmonBusiness.

That represents a decline from last week’s price levels. He does not hide the fact that salmon prices were significantly higher earlier this week. At that point, fish was being traded in the mid-80s.

“Everyone was optimistic up until Wednesday. The big players are taking out more fish than the market can absorb. Now you get seven euros in the market. That is the price,” he says.

High volumes

“We are harvesting a hell of a lot of volume. It is not a bad market, but customers are taking a low price because we are harvesting more than normal.”

“It is also quiet on fillet. You cannot match customers abroad on sup-prices from Norway,” he adds.

The price level is confirmed from several quarters.

“Prices in Oslo are now around NOK 71.00–73.00 ($7.10–7.30/€6.32–6.50). Significant volumes of fish are being slaughtered, and customers are cautious, with good reason, in light of the past few weeks,” comments an exporter.

Falling biomass

Prices are flat from three kilos and up. With the important China market in New Year holiday mode, there is no premium to be had for large fish.

“NOK 70.00 ($7.00/€6.23) to farms in the north,” says another exporter, adding: “Another hellish week. And it will continue next week if we do not get the right purchase price this week.”

Others prefer to take a more positive view:

“We are very positive about the volumes that are moving. Slightly falling biomass, but prices are actually very, very good. Large volumes are moving. It is probably in the cards that prices will improve before too long, even with a strengthening krone,” comments a farmer.

Despite a challenging start to the year, Sitagri Sisalmon, formerly known as Fish Pool, reports financial year contracts at 7,313 euros per tonne (NOK 82.32 per kilo ($8.23/€7.33)) for salmon, delivered Oslo.
