This is why Mowi left the Global Salmon Initiative

The salmon giant will work with sustainability on its own two feet.

On Tuesday, it became known that Mowi has withdrawn from the Global Salmon Initiative (GSI), the joint organization that is behind about half of the world’s farmed salmon. When the news became known, there was no reason why market leader Mowi broke out.

Now the company is telling why.

“GSI has brought parts of the aquaculture industry together to become even more sustainable and efficient through collaboration and sharing of knowledge. The organization was especially important to get ASC on its feet,” Ola Helge Hjetland, communications manager at Mowi, explained to SalmonBusiness.

ASC, which is an abbreviation for Aquaculture Stewardship Council, was established on the initiative of WWF, among others. The standard sets eight main requirements with a total of 422 points in areas such as habitat impact, escape, smolt production, control of disease and parasites, drug use and the content of fish feed.

“Our commitment to sustainability continues as before, and we will continue to work closely with the other players in the industry,” Hjetland continued.

“We still believe that a global organization is not the solution to the local and national challenges we face,” he emphasized.
