Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau pledged to remove salmon farming in British Columbia within five years. Now work has just started.

In the autumn of 2019, it was announced that Trudeau would salmon farming into closed facilities in British Columbia within five years if elected. It will affect both Mowi, Cermaq and Grieg Seafood, all of which have operations in the area.

On Thursday the Government of Canada announced that it has decided to phase out salmon farming in the Discovery Islands, British Columbia, from June 30, 2022. This represents 30 per-cent, or about 10-12,000 tonnes (gutted weight) of Mowi’s total average annual harvest volume in British Columbia from 2022, Mowi wrote in a stock exchange announcement Friday morning.

Harvest volume for 2021 will not be affected, the company clarified.

Further to this Mowi will develop a mitigation plan and revised strategy for its operations in British Columbia.
