MYGroup forms joint venture with Beta Bugs to secure Black Soldier Fly egg supply.

Waste management company MYGroup has entered into a joint venture with insect genetics firm Beta Bugs to ensure a secure supply of Black Soldier Fly (BSF) eggs for its proprietary Insectology™ food waste bioconversion process.

As part of the agreement, Beta Bugs will act as MYGroup’s exclusive BSF egg supplier. A new breeding and hatching facility will be established at MYGroup’s site at The Maltings in South Milford, near Leeds, completing an end-to-end process for BSF bioconversion within the company.

The partnership gives MYGroup direct access to Beta Bugs’ hatchery expertise and specialist BSF genetics, aimed at improving the efficiency and consistency of its insect-based waste processing. Beta Bugs, which operates from the Roslin Innovation Centre in Edinburgh, will use the opportunity to scale production of its BSF breeds – including HiPer-Fly® and Just-Fly™ – for wider distribution to the UK market.

Steve Carrie, Group Director at MYGroup, said the vertical integration of egg supply would improve “quality, reliability and transparency at every stage” of the company’s Insectology™ platform.

Beta Bugs founder and CEO Thomas Farrugia described the collaboration as a “model of combined efforts” that will help scale the insect farming sector in the UK.

Insect bioconversion with BSF larvae is gaining attention as a method to reduce food waste volumes by up to 75% in under 10 days, while producing high-value outputs such as protein meal and fertiliser. The venture follows the launch of MYGroup’s first dedicated BSF facility earlier this year.

Insect protein, particularly from Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae, is being actively explored as an alternative to fishmeal and soy in aquafeed. This joint venture supports that supply chain, improving availability and scalability.
