Scottish Sea Farms warns of fish welfare risks from Scapa port plans.

Scottish Sea Farms (SSF) has raised concerns that the construction of the proposed Scapa Deep Water Quay could harm fish welfare at its nearby salmon farm, according to a report in The Orcadian.

In a planning objection, SSF stated that the boundary of its farm lies approximately 800 metres south of the area where dredging would take place. The company warned that noise generated during construction could have a “significant impact” on stock health, including the risk of temporary hearing loss in fish.

Orkney Islands Council has acknowledged the risk in its own environmental assessment, noting that “temporary hearing loss could occur” during the building phase.

Although the £200 million project has undergone design changes and further ground investigations are ongoing, SSF confirmed its objection remains in place.

The proposed development is intended to expand deep-water port infrastructure in Scapa Flow.
