Faroese fisheries minister visits UK to promote sustainability.
Faroese Fisheries Minister Jóhan Christiansen has visited the UK to promote the Faroe Islands’ focus on sustainability in seafood.
“With seafood exports well over 90% of our total export value, we are deeply dependent on the living resources of the sea,” Christiansen said. “The sea is – and has always been – the very foundation for our society and culture in the North Atlantic. This is why sustainability is not a choice for us, it is a necessity. We have built and are building systems to ensure our fish stocks remain productive, to restore them when needed, and to protect the clean marine environment on which we depend.”
The minister was hosted in Grimsby by Bakkafrost UK. His programme included visits to seafood processing facilities, Seafish, the Seafood Institute, the Fishing Heritage Centre and local fish and chip restaurants.
According to Bakkafrost UK head Torkil Davidsen, the visit was an opportunity to underline the Faroe Islands’ reliance on sustainable fisheries and aquaculture, and to strengthen ties with the UK seafood industry.
