75,000 salmon escape from Mowi Scotland site during Storm Amy
Mowi Scotland has reported the loss of approximately 75,000 salmon from its Gorsten farm following damage sustained during Storm Amy over the weekend.
The company said the escaped fish had an average weight of 860 grams. Initial investigations suggest that intense weather conditions caused mooring anchors to drag, bringing the pen net into contact with a flotation pipe and resulting in a tear.
“Despite challenging conditions, Mowi swiftly informed the relevant authorities, including local fisheries stakeholders, and is now undertaking a full investigation,” the company said in a statement.
Mowi said it is working to assess the extent of the damage and review containment systems at the site.
