Nordlaks’ semi-closed ‘Storbåtsegget’ arrives in Norway as sector tests new containment models.

Nordlaks’ new semi-closed farming unit, known as “Storbåtsegget”, is arriving in Vesterålen this weekend after a three-week transport from Turkey, marking the company’s latest investment in alternative containment systems aimed at reducing lice pressure and improving fish health.

The structure is being delivered on the heavy-lift vessel GPO Emerald and is expected to pass Melbu and Fiskebøl on Friday afternoon, with final positioning at the Sørvika site scheduled for Saturday. A float-off operation is planned for Sunday, after anchoring preparations are completed.

The project, internally titled “Hydra”, is Nordlaks’ first semi-closed unit and reflects wider industry efforts in Norway to trial steel- or composite-walled systems in more exposed sites, partly in response to stricter lice regulations and potential production-area penalties.

“This will be a major milestone for Nordlaks,” said executive vice president Eirik Welde. “The system combines traditional farming with modern technology to improve fish welfare.”

Owner Inge Berg, who inspected the unit at the Gemak yard prior to departure, said the company aims to have the structure operational ahead of first stocking in May.

Nordlaks said the mooring operation is a major undertaking and has advised vessels in the area to keep clear over the coming days.

The system will undergo further work on site before commissioning and will not be open to visitors.
