Mowi to expand post-smolt capacity at sea,
Mowi plans to nearly double its capacity in closed sea cages over the next year as part of its post-smolt strategy in Norway, according to a Facebook post from the company.
The company said it has worked with closed cage technology in the sea for more than a decade, first deploying closed cages at scale in 2013. According to estimates from the analysis firm Kontali, more than one third of Mowi’s current production capacity is now based on closed systems, making it the largest operator of closed sea cages in the farming sector.
The expansion is intended to support increased post-smolt production. Mowi describes closed cages as a supplement to land-based post-smolt facilities and traditional open sea cages.
The company said post-smolt production enables improved fish welfare, higher survival rates and more efficient use of resources. It added that it will continue development and optimisation work related to closed cage technology.
Mowi operates closed sea cages at several locations, including its site at Slåttenes in Vestland county.
The company has previously stated that closed cage systems are part of a broader portfolio of production technologies rather than a replacement for conventional sea-based farming.
