Bacterial kidney disease (BKD) has been confirmed at a salmon farming site in Hitra municipality in Trøndelag, Norwegian authorities said.
The disease was detected at site 12348 Kåholmen, operated by Mowi Seawater Norway AS, which produces farmed Atlantic salmon at the location.
According to Mattilsynet, suspicion of BKD was first reported on 16 January 2026 following routine health sampling. Laboratory results from Veterinærinstituttet confirmed the diagnosis on 29 January.
Restrictions have been imposed on the site to limit the risk of disease spread, including a ban on moving fish without special permission. Authorities have also urged heightened biosecurity in the surrounding area, warning against the sharing of equipment, vessels or personnel between aquaculture sites unless strict cleaning and disinfection procedures are followed.
The case has been published on BarentsWatch’s interactive map of aquatic animal disease incidents.
