ScaleAQ has agreed to supply a feed barge and associated equipment to Japan Salmon Farm as the Japanese trout producer expands production in northern Honshu.
The project marks the first time a feed barge will be built in Vietnam under Norwegian project management, according to the company.
The delivery includes the barge, mooring system, cameras and feeding technology. The vessel will be constructed at a shipyard in Vietnam and transported to Japan this summer.
Japan Salmon Farm, owned by Okamura Foods, produced about 3,500 tonnes of trout last year and is targeting output of 12,000 tonnes by 2030.
Japan currently accounts for around 0.6 percent of global salmon production, but authorities have signalled support for expanding both land-based and sea-based aquaculture in the country.
