Alaska’s salmon catch was coming close to 121 million fish by August 4, reports The Fish Site.

Sockeye salmon totaled about 50m, of which nearly 38m were from Bristol Bay. State wide pink salmon catches were on their way to 52m, half of that coming from Prince William Sound. The total Alaska salmon catch for this year is pegged at 204 million fish.

Wild salmon season

Peak season for salmon fishing is from May through September, with the five major species spread across the season, starting with King Salmon in May.

Alaska has a yearly quota for wild salmon fisheries. Because the peak of the season only lasts two months and Alaska doesn’t have enough storage facilities, most of the salmon will be frozen and exported directly after being caught.
