High harvest activity, but price pressure on the heavy salmon

The average price for salmon has not moved much from last Friday’s level.

“There has been a price squeeze on the big fish,” says a fish farmer to SalmonBusiness. “We don’t have 3-4 and 4-5 kg in the spot market, only fixed contracts.” [factbox]

“But there is a lot of volume, so it’s positive,” he adds.

High activity
“The exchange rate has declined slightly, but there are still good rates. The price is a little down, but not much from last week. One to one and a half krone down,” says one salmon exporter, adding that it has been a tough week with large price fluctuations.

At the beginning of November, seasonal activity is very high for salmon processors and traders.

“It’s a lot of work. Now the customers have bought a lot of cheap fish, and are not willing to go for very high prices,” he adds.

“It’s early, not much has been done,” says another exporter, but sees fairly stable prices compared to last Friday.

Competing
“There is a slight decline,” says another exporter about the salmon price. “But what’s difficult is the smallest sizes. It probably has a bit to say with Chile, since we compete in the same markets overseas.”

SalmonBusiness’ industry sources refer to the following farmgate prices for salmon to be delivered to the market over the next week:

  • 3-4 kg NOK 44-45 (€4.4-4.5)
  • 4-5 kg NOK 46-47 (€4.6-4.7)
  • 5-6 kg NOK 48-49 (€4.8-4.9)
  • 6+ kg NOK 53-55 (€5.3-5.5)
