Aquabyte founder joins NOAA as senior advisor
Bryton Shang, founder of aquaculture technology company Aquabyte, has been appointed as a senior advisor at the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
In a LinkedIn post this week, Shang said he was “excited” to join the federal agency and would be supporting its mission of monitoring oceans and the atmosphere. NOAA plays a central role in marine resource management, fisheries data, and climate science.
The appointment marks a shift from startup entrepreneurship to public sector advisory work for Shang, who co-founded Aquabyte to apply computer vision and machine learning to salmon farming operations, including real-time lice counting and biomass estimation.
Shang said the new role would allow him to continue applying artificial intelligence to “important world challenges.”
NOAA is a key stakeholder in US fisheries policy and marine technology development, including oversight of aquaculture permitting and environmental monitoring.
