Lantra Scotland publishes aquaculture training workbooks for schools
Lantra Scotland has released two student workbooks to support the National Progression Award (NPA) Level 4 in Aquaculture, a school-level qualification designed to introduce pupils to careers in the aquaculture sector.
The materials were developed over nine months with input from salmon producers Bakkafrost Scotland, Mowi Scotland and Scottish Sea Farms, along with UHI Argyll.
According to Lantra Scotland, the workbooks were created to provide consistent, professional teaching resources for schools delivering the course. The materials include topic introductions, activity-based learning modules and space for pupils to record observations from work placements, linking classroom learning with practical industry experience.
“This project shows what can be achieved when education and industry come together with a shared purpose,” said Dr Jillian Couto-Phoenix, head of aquaculture at Lantra.
“By collaborating closely, we’ve been able to create resources that give young people a clearer, more engaging insight into aquaculture, helping them build confidence and develop the skills that are valued across the sector.”
Industry partners said the collaboration aimed to ensure the material reflects modern salmon farming practices and can be used in a range of teaching environments.
The NPA Level 4 in Aquaculture is currently the only school-based qualification in Scotland focused specifically on preparing students for work in the sector. The new workbooks are now available for use by schools across the UK.
