Bauta Fishfarms secures first contract for VARIG closed cage.
Bauta Fishfarms has signed its first contract for the VARIG closed cage design, launched in March this year. The steel-constructed cage will be built in Møre og Romsdal for OceanDock, which will lease it to salmon farmer Prophylaxia.
OceanDock is a newly established company owned by Bauta Group, Rofisk and Prophylaxia, all existing shareholders in Bauta Fishfarms. The business model, similar to a shipping company structure, aims to reduce capital costs for farmers by leasing cages rather than requiring direct investment.
Prophylaxia, which has prior experience with closed post-smolt production, will operate the pilot project, scheduled to begin in 2026. The contract includes an option for up to 10 additional cages. Bauta says it has capacity to deliver 30 closed cages annually.
Bauta CEO Gjermund Kvernmo Langset said the agreement aligns with industry trends and makes advanced technology more accessible to fish farmers.
