Suspected BKD case reported at Hofseth site in Møre og Romsdal.
The Norwegian Food Safety Authority (Mattilsynet) has reported a suspected case of bacterial kidney disease (BKD) at Hofseth Aqua’s farming site Urdaneset (location ID 45058) in Stranda municipality, Møre og Romsdal.
The suspicion follows routine sampling, with one fish testing positive for Renibacterium salmoninarum via PCR analysis. Further samples have been sent to the Norwegian Veterinary Institute for confirmation.
In response, Mattilsynet has imposed movement restrictions on the site, including a ban on transferring fish without special permission. Other operators in the area are urged to exercise caution to prevent potential disease spread, particularly through shared use of boats, equipment, or personnel.
BKD is a chronic bacterial infection affecting salmonids and has been a recurring concern in aquaculture. No effective vaccine currently exists for use in harvest-size fish, and standard response measures include culling and fallowing.
