Breaking: Land-based producer reports ‘significant mortality’ as first smolt are released

Land-based salmon producer Gigante Salmon has begun production at its new facility in Rødøy. The company released 640,000 smolt, averaging around 100 grams each, into its first production unit.

While the initial delivery was successful, the company experienced substantial mortality during the second delivery. Further details will be provided once the extent of this issue is fully assessed, according to a release from the company on Tuesday.

“Our focus is currently on ensuring the well-being of the fish and gaining valuable operational experience,” said CEO Helge E. W. Albertsen.

The production has started in one of the facility’s three basins, with the remaining two basins expected to be operational throughout 2024. The company anticipates the next smolt release to occur in Q3 2024.
