A new research project funded by Fiskeri- og havbruksnæringens forskningsfinansiering, the Norwegian Seafood Research Fund, will examine biosafety practices in large commercial recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) facilities producing post-smolt salmon.
The project, called RASafe and led by Cermaq Group, will test cleaning and disinfection strategies for tanks, pipes and biofilters between production cycles in a full-scale commercial RAS facility.
Trials will be carried out at Cermaq Norway’s post-smolt facility at Veines in Hasvik municipality in northern Norway. The site is designed to produce around 12 million smolt annually before transfer to sea.
Project partners include fish health company Pharmaq, research institution Nord universitet, hatchery operator Helgeland Smolt and salmon farmer Mowi.
The project began in February 2026 and is scheduled to run until February 2030.
