Aquafarm Equipment begins commissioning of floating closed-containment unit with Cermaq Norway.
Aquafarm Equipment has launched its fourth glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) closed-containment cage in partnership with Cermaq Norway, following assembly and commissioning work at Nordbase quay in Harstad, Norway. The floating system entered the water this week and will now transit to Cermaq’s Horsvågen site in Hamarøy, Nordland, where operations are due to begin after final calibration and circulation testing.
The company said commissioning involves sensor calibration, circulation tuning and deep-water intake configuration before first stocking. The design provides controlled inflow, oxygenated intake water and sludge capture to maintain stable conditions and support fish welfare through winter.
Aquafarm’s production team assembled the facility in just four weeks this summer, supported by subcontractor Brimer on laminating work and a crew of 20–35 people on site. The location at Nordbase enabled efficient logistics and heavy lifts directly from the quay, according to Production Manager Martin Ramstad, who described close collaboration with Cermaq throughout the project.
The project has drawn local interest in Harstad, where Aquafarm maintains a 7,000-square-metre warehouse and assembly base.
