Norway-headquartered Cermaq has received the okay from county officials to raise its smolt production by a million fish at its Steigen nursery, Norwegian Avisa Nordland has reported.
The company can go-ahead and raise production on the site to 3. 5 million from 2. 5 million per year. That entails a corresponding nod to increase the use of feed to 450 tonnes from 250 t, the newspaper wrote.
Feed amounts more than doubled due to the larger juvenile fish being produced.
According to the newspaper, this is the first of two planned production increases. A Phase 2 entails expanding the physical facility for the eventual growth of 200-gram smolt.
