Chilean salmon producer Multi X has announced a significant step towards sustainability by transitioning 100% of its fresh fillet packaging to biodegradable materials.
These new materials maintain the same mechanical, barrier, and functional characteristics as conventional materials but biodegrade in 6 to 20 months under various conditions, according to an update from the company on Monday.
This initiative covers 35% of Multi X’s annual production and is expected to positively impact sales in the United States, the company’s primary export market.
The producer has partnered with Bioelements Group, a pioneering Chilean start-up in biotechnology and circular economy, to replace over 18 million bags annually with 100% biodegradable alternatives.
The move aligns with Multi X’s Sustainability Strategy, launched in 2021, and brings the company closer to its goal of achieving carbon neutrality.
