European salmon farming company Columbi Salmon has hired Mari Birkeland as the head of health, safety, environment and quality at the company’s subsidiary Columbi Farms.

Announcing the move on her LinkedIn page, Birkeland stated that her role will involve working to “produce more food with fewer resources and help ensure that there is always a season for healthy and tasty Norwegian salad, leafy vegetables, herbs and many other innovative product options.”

Birkeland, who received a MSC in Biotechnology from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in 2019, previously worked as a Project Manager for Columbi Salmon and a Water Quality Consultant for More Fish AS.

Columbi Salmon was founded by the Refsnes family, who had a track record within the Norwegian salmon industry. The company  is seeking to produce 15,000-20,000 tonnes of sustainable food by 2023-24.
