Mowi achieves record feed efficiency at Gorsten site

Mowi Scotland has reported what it believes may be the company’s most efficient feed conversion ratio (FCR) to date for full production fish, with its Loch Linnhe site at Gorsten reaching an FCR of 1.002.

The result means that for every 1.002kg of feed, the farm produced 1kg of salmon – an efficiency level rarely seen in commercial aquaculture. By comparison, Mowi’s typical FCR ranges from 1.1 to 1.2, while terrestrial livestock such as cattle average around 8:1.

The milestone was attributed to coordinated efforts between Gorsten’s on-site staff and Mowi’s remote operations centre (ROC), with continuous data monitoring, close communication, and precision feeding techniques credited for the outcome. The site is managed by Scott Cameron, with feed operations overseen remotely by Davie Horne.

A new cycle of smolts has just been stocked at the site. Mowi said it will now look to build on this performance in the next generation.
