Earthquake recorded off the coast of Southern Chile

6.8 magnitude earthquake 140km west of the town of Corral, about 150 miles away from salmon city Puerto Montt.

A quake recorded off the coast of Los Lagos in the south of Chile was recorded on Sunday night at 21:39 (CLT).

The National Emergency Office of the Ministry of interior and public security (ONEMI) reported that a medium-intensity earthquake in the regions of BiobĂ­o, La AraucanĂ­a, Los RĂ­os and Los Lagos, home to many salmon farming sites and processors.

To date, the body said that the characteristics of the earthquake does not meet the necessary conditions to generate a tsunami off the coast of Chile.

A 6.8 magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale may cause a lot of damage in very populated areas. From 7.0 upwards it is considered a major earthquake.

ONEMI added that no harm or damage has been reported.
