A fire broke out in the cold storage area of the Abelvaer Filetfabrikk salmon processing plant in south central Norway on Monday.
The blaze was discovered by staff around 9 AM, with no reported injuries among personnel.
Firefighters swiftly responded to the scene, working to contain the fire, while a rescue boat aided in the efforts. The cold storage, housing an estimated 50,000kg (50 metric tons) of salmon, sustained damage, though the full extent remains uncertain.
“No employees have been injured, and they discovered the fire fairly quickly, so that is the most important thing,” chairman Magnus Kjøraas, co-owner of the site, told Norwegian broadcaster NRK.
The filleting area of the plant, located approximately 100-150 meters away from the cold storage, remained unscathed.
Abelvaer Filetfabrikk recorded revenues of NOK 62 million ($5.7 million) in 2022.
