Rangen becomes first US feed mill to secure ASC certification.
Rangen Aquaculture Nutrition has become the first aquafeed producer in the United States to achieve Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) Feed Certification, marking a significant step for the American aquaculture sector.
The company’s Buhl feed mill in Idaho’s Magic Valley – a major centre for U.S. trout and salmon farming – is now certified to produce ASC-compliant feed for freshwater trout, salmon, seriola, cobia, shrimp and tilapia.
ASC Feed Certification sets requirements for the traceability and responsible sourcing of all feed ingredients, including fishmeal, fish oil and plant-based inputs such as soy, wheat and palm oil. Feed is one of the largest environmental and social risk factors in aquaculture, and ASC standards will become mandatory for ASC-certified farms from 31 October 2025.
Aisla Jones, feed engagement manager at ASC, said the certification “demonstrates a trailblazing step forward in responsible sourcing and production”.
Rangen supplies feed to Riverence Provisions, an ASC-certified trout producer in Idaho. Carrington Gorman, director of aquaculture at Rangen, said the company’s alignment with the ASC Feed Standard “shows we’ve met the world’s strictest standards to deliver an exceptional product that’s not only nutritious for animals, but sustainable for the environment”.
Rangen’s certification comes as U.S. producers prepare for tighter sourcing requirements and growing pressure to demonstrate supply chain integrity. The company said it expects demand for ASC-certified feed to increase as farms move to comply with the forthcoming deadline.
