Global fishmeal and fish oil production rises in 2025.

Global fishmeal and fish oil production is tracking ahead of 2024 levels, according to new figures from IFFO.

By July 2025, cumulative fishmeal output was up around 8 percent year-on-year, driven by higher production across most regions except Northern Europe. Fish oil production rose by 5 percent over the same period, with declines recorded in Spain, Iceland/North Atlantic and Peru.

“Global fishmeal and fish oil production is consistent with IFFO’s 2025 estimates at 5.6 million tons of fishmeal and 1.2–1.3 million tons of fish oil,” said Dr Enrico Bachis, IFFO’s Market Research Director.

Peru, which typically accounts for around 20 percent of global production, extended its North-Centre anchovy season into late July this year, compared to a June closure in 2024.

In China, the peak season for aquafeed production is underway following the lifting of fishing bans across the South China Sea and East China Sea. Domestic marine ingredient output in the first seven months of 2025 was lower than a year earlier, although fishmeal consumption in aquaculture has exceeded 2024 levels, supported by stronger farm profitability.
