Minister of Digital Government Joyce Murray – who is also Member of Parliament for Vancouver Quadra and President of the Treasury Board – said she had a great discussion about “moving forward to end open net pen aquaculture in Pacific coastal waters”.
Justin Trudeau’s Liberal party has been quiet on the subject of phasing out open-net salmon farms to closed containment systems by 2025, since it was announced as part of its selection campaign in October. Until now that is.
However the news did not come from Nova Scotia’s Bernadette Jordan who is now heading up the country’s Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

But in a post on Facebook and Twitter, Joyce Murray who is Minister of Digital Government wrote: “Great discussion today with Pacific Salmon Foundation about protecting wild salmon and moving forward to end open net pen aquaculture in Pacific coastal waters”.
The Pacific Salmon Foundation said it was created to conserve and rebuild Pacific salmon stocks and rejects open-net systems.
SalmonBusiness has contacted Murray to find out what was discussed at the meeting.
