Nordlaks ships 6,000-tonne “storbåtsegget” ocean tank from turkey to vesterålen.
Nordlaks said the heavy-lift freighter “GPO Emerald” has departed a shipyard outside Istanbul carrying the company’s 6,000-tonne closed production tank, newly named “Storbåtsegget” and previously referred to as Project Hydra. The unit is bound for Vesterålen in Norway.
The tank was built by the Gemak group and, according to earlier company information, has a 70-metre diameter with a sealed roof and steel walls extending to 20 metres below the surface. The system is open at the bottom with a net to an overall operating depth of almost 50 metres and a stated volume of 86,700 cubic metres. Under-roof spaces include feed storage, engine room, workshop and a dead-fish handling system.
Nordlaks said loading and securing of the structure took several days before departure. Depending on weather, the voyage north is expected to take around 16–17 days, with arrival in Hadselfjorden projected for early November. The tank will be operated from Nordlaks’ base and operations centre on Børøya near Stokmarknes.
Fish stocking is planned for the spring. With Storbåtsegget in place, Nordlaks will have two large steel structures in its salmon operations, alongside the “Jostein Albert” sea farm.
