Icelandic land-based salmon farmers plan joint venture to process waste.
Four of Iceland’s land-based salmon producers—First Water, Laxey, Samherji Fishfarming and Thor Salmon—have signed a declaration of intent to collaborate on aquaculture waste management.
The companies plan to establish a joint venture to process fish sludge into valuable products. A business plan and financing needs assessment are expected to be completed before the end of October 2025.
The initiative is being developed in collaboration with Terraforming LIFE, an EU-funded project, and the Icelandic Farmers’ Association. The project aims to combine saline fish sludge with livestock manure to produce organic fertiliser and biogas.
“The declaration demonstrates that Icelandic land-based fish farming is ready to join forces in developing sustainable solutions. Together with Terraforming LIFE and the Icelandic Farmers’ Association, this initiative aims to turn waste streams into valuable products and strengthen Iceland’s circular economy,” said Margrét Ágústa Sigurðardóttir, CEO of the Icelandic Farmers’ Association.
The partnership is intended to improve the sustainability of land-based aquaculture and contribute to Iceland’s wider circular economy goals.
