Indian diplomat visits Bakkafrost Scotland site as salmon sector targets tariff cut.

India’s Consul General in Edinburgh, Siddharth Malik, visited a Bakkafrost Scotland salmon farm in Loch Fyne as Scottish producers position for potential export growth following a proposed UK-India trade agreement.

The visit to the Stronachullin site included demonstrations of artificial intelligence systems used to monitor feeding and support real-time farm decisions, as well as hybrid-powered barge operations aimed at reducing emissions.

The trip was attended by Salmon Scotland chair Atholl Duncan and Bakkafrost Scotland managing director Ian Laister.

The sector is closely watching trade negotiations expected to remove India’s current 33% tariff on salmon imports.

Salmon Scotland estimates exports to India could be worth up to £130 million over the next decade under a higher-growth scenario.

Scottish salmon exports to India were around 70 tonnes annually worth about £0.5 million up to 2022, according to industry figures.

Scottish salmon was the UK’s largest food export in 2025, with overseas sales of £828 million, while exports to Asia rose 18%, according to HMRC data.
