Finnish aquaculture technology company, Finnforel, has announced a significant investment from Japanese industrial giant Mitsubishi to accelerate its global expansion of land-based fish farming projects.

The investment will support Finnforel’s development of its “Gigafactory” concept, which integrates environmentally friendly fish farming, processing, and packaging under one roof, allowing for large-scale production with minimal waste and a reduced carbon footprint, according to a press release from the company.

The focus of the investment will be on Finnforel’s farming of rainbow trout, a species well-suited to recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS).

These systems, which use advanced biofiltration techniques to control environmental conditions while recirculating water, ensure zero biowaste and minimal wastewater. RAS systems facilitate year-round fish production regardless of external environmental conditions, and play a crucial role in Finnforel’s sustainability strategy.

Pekka A. Viljakainen, CEO and co-founder of Finnforel, highlighted the importance of the investment in supporting the company’s mission of producing sustainable seafood with zero environmental impact. “Our Gigafactory concept with a 0% waste policy will revolutionize the way we produce fish, providing fresh, sustainable products to consumers while minimizing our environmental footprint,” Viljakainen said. “Mitsubishi’s global distribution channels, talent, and resources will be invaluable as we scale our operations.”

Founded in 2015, Finnforel operates a vertically integrated system from hatchery to farming, processing, and packaging, with current production volumes of 3,000 tons per year in Finland. With this investment, the company aims to expand its operations globally, with plans to multiply its capacity by 2032.

Mitsubishi Corporation’s interest in Finnforel reflects growing investor focus on sustainable food production. Akihiko Soga, COO of MC’s Marine Products Division, said, “We are pleased to support Finnforel in their goal of developing a sustainable protein supply. Their Gigafactory concept is an impressive model of integrated, environmentally friendly food production.”

Finnforel’s Gigafactory concept aims to not only produce fish more efficiently but also support local food systems and reduce the carbon footprint associated with long-distance transport by minimizing the number of logistical steps in the supply chain. This will ensure that fish products reach consumers with maximum freshness and lower costs.

With this new partnership, Finnforel is poised to become a leader in sustainable aquaculture, with plans to expand into new markets and bring its innovative technology to a global audience. The company’s goal of achieving zero waste and emissions while maximizing the circularity of resources such as water, energy, and nutrients underscores its commitment to creating a more sustainable future for food production.
