Andfjord Salmon, a land-based salmon farming company based on Andøya in Norway, has partnered with aquaculture technology firm OptoScale to integrate precision monitoring tools into its operations.

The collaboration aims to enhance fish welfare and optimize operational efficiency as Andfjord Salmon scales up production.

Andfjord Salmon is currently constructing four additional tanks at its Kvalnes site, which will bring its production capacity to 8,000 tons of gutted salmon annually by 2025. Long-term plans include expanding capacity to 40,000 tons. The company uses water pumped from the Gulf Stream, 40–50 meters below the surface, to mitigate risks such as sea lice and algae.

The partnership with OptoScale focuses on deploying tools that provide data on fish health, growth metrics, and harvest predictions. OptoScale’s technology includes imaging systems that analyze fish weight and welfare. A third-generation version of OptoScale’s Bioscope, set for release in 2025, will include integrated feed monitoring capabilities.

“OptoScale’s tools allow Andfjord to track key metrics in real time and support long-term planning,” said Christian Halmøy Torgersen, COO of Andfjord Salmon.

During its pilot phase, Andfjord Salmon reported a 97.5% survival rate and a feed conversion ratio of 1.05, alongside an energy consumption of 1 kWh per kilogram of salmon produced.

The collaboration reflects a broader industry trend toward incorporating technology to address challenges in fish health and sustainability. OptoScale CEO Sven Jørund Kolstø noted that the partnership with Andfjord allows the company to further refine its offerings for land-based aquaculture.
