MiAlgae, an Edinburgh-based company recognized for utilizing whisky industry by-products to cultivate algae for Omega-3 production, has appointed Chris Haacke as its new Commercial Director. The appointment is part of the company’s strategy to expand its revenue streams and promote business growth.

Chris Haacke brings considerable experience from the aquaculture and animal nutrition sectors. He previously worked at Agronutris, a French firm specializing in sustainable proteins and fats derived from insects for animal nutrition. At Agronutris, Haacke served as the Director of Business Development.

Haacke’s background in aquaculture includes various commercial roles within the Pan Fish Group from 1992 to 2005, where he was notably the Sales and Marketing Director for Pan Fish Scotland, and later took on a global marketing role at MSD Animal Health Aquaculture.

In 2017, Haacke joined Corbion Algae ingredients as the Global Aquaculture Lead. His responsibilities included developing the global aquaculture growth strategy, managing strategic accounts, and leading the Aquaculture Business Development Team. He played a critical role in the commercial development of a new technology, transforming it from a niche product to a mainstream ingredient for the aquaculture industry.

Douglas Martin, Founder and Managing Director of MiAlgae, expressed enthusiasm for Haacke’s joining the team, citing his experience and talent as vital for MiAlgae’s next growth phase.

MiAlgae, established in 2016 by Douglas Martin, focuses on reducing the reliance on wild-caught fish as an Omega-3 source. The company produces NaturAlgae, an omega-3 powder high in DHA and other oils, by growing microalgae with whisky industry by-products. NaturAlgae is used in aquafeed, pet food, and livestock foods.

Chris Haacke commenced his role at MiAlgae in February 2024.
