Mowi Canada East confirms mass fish deaths at Harvey Hill East, Harvey Hill South, Broad Cove.
Mowi Canada East has reported an “abnormal mortality event exceeding 10 percent of the site population” at three sites on Newfoundland’s south coast, affecting about 1.7 million Atlantic salmon at Harvey Hill East, Harvey Hill South and Broad Cove in Harbour Breton Bay. The reports are dated 31 August.
The company said dead fish are being removed and disposed of, and some remaining fish are being harvested while investigations into the cause continue, under oversight from the provincial Department of Fisheries.
Mowi told local media that mortality events occur periodically across livestock farming and described 2025 as an “environmentally tough year,” but declined to specify survival numbers for the affected sites.
The incident follows a separate event on 20 July at Little Burdock Cove near Rencontre East, where more than 10 percent of stock — about 17,600 fish — died during a period of increased water temperatures and reduced oxygen levels.
Mowi has been required to report mortality events in Newfoundland and Labrador since 2019, when approximately 2.6 million fish died at sites in Fortune Bay and several licences were temporarily suspended before later being reinstated.
