Mowi has reported the loss of 21,000 salmon following a sudden drop in oxygen levels at its Napp site, located in Hidrasundet near Flekkefjord, Norway.
“Yes, it is true that there was an incident in September at the location Napp in Flekkefjord where around 21,000 salmon died in connection with a lack of oxygen,” confirms head of department Håvard Hustoft in the inspection division for aquaculture in the southern department of the Food Safety Authority to Norwegian newspaper Avisen Agder.
“On the night of 5 September, the oxygen levels at the plant at Napp fell suddenly and dramatically, probably due to the intrusion of water from the sea with an abnormally high temperature and low oxygen content. This meant that some fish unfortunately died, which is of course very regrettable,” says communications Mowi communications director, Ola Helge Hjetland confirmed to the paper.
This follows a similar incident in July, when 60,000 salmon died during delousing operations at another Mowi facility in Skipningsdalen, Flekkefjord.
