Consumers in possession of the affected product are advised to either discard it or return it to the point of purchase.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is currently investigating Mowi-branded cold-smoked Norwegian Atlantic Salmon due to potential contamination with Clostridium botulinum, the bacterium responsible for botulism.
The recall involves 113-gram packages of the smoked salmon distributed in Ontario between March 27 and April 10, 2024. To date, no illnesses linked to this issue have been reported.
Consumers in possession of the affected product are advised to either discard it or return it to the point of purchase. While the salmon may not show signs of spoilage such as an off smell or appearance, it can still pose a serious health risk.
Symptoms of botulism include facial paralysis, unreactive pupils, drooping eyelids, and difficulty with swallowing or speaking. Children affected may show signs of weakness or paralysis.
The CFIA warns that botulism, which does not induce fever, can be fatal if not treated. They recommend that anyone who believes they may have contracted botulism seek immediate medical attention. Further recalls may be enacted pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
