Stressful situations, such as crowding and handling, can lead to reduced feeding, stunted growth and increased susceptibility to secondary infections.

Aquaculture feed specialist BioMar has launched a new product named ‘Calm’ targeting stress management and performance improvement in salmon farming.

The development of ‘Calm’ comes in response to the challenges faced by salmon due to treatments for sea lice, including mechanical and other methods, according to a release from the compay on Monday.

These treatments often lead to stress events for the fish, such as crowding and handling, which in turn can lead to reduced feeding, stunted growth potential, and increased susceptibility to secondary infections. These issues can result in decreased final harvest weight and lower quality of the salmon.

‘Calm’ is an additive designed for integration into grower diets, It can be used alongside existing SmartCare products, according to the producer.

BioMar recommends using SmartCare Calm strategically before and after any planned stress event. This approach aims to mitigate welfare risks and help maintain expected performance levels in fish farming operations.
