Lerøy opens aquaculture exhibition centre in Kirkenes.
Lerøy has officially opened a new aquaculture exhibition and information centre in Kirkenes, marking a further expansion of its presence in Eastern Finnmark.
The new facility is designed to improve transparency and public engagement, offering visitors insights into modern aquaculture practices with a focus on fish welfare, environmental impact, and year-round employment across the seafood value chain.
“This is a big day for us,” said Kurt Einar Karlsen, General Manager of Lerøy Aurora. “We want to show how aquaculture contributes to food production, jobs and communities, and invite open dialogue about both our achievements and the challenges we must address.”
The company already operates whitefish activities in Båtsfjord and Kjøllefjord, and the new site reflects its long-term commitment to developing aquaculture in the region. Karlsen cited the government’s recent support for sustainable growth in the sector as an encouraging signal for continued investment in rural areas.
The facility, located in central Kirkenes, will serve school groups, the local population, and industry stakeholders. It was officially opened by Fisheries and Oceans Minister Marianne Sivertsen Næss.
“This is an important step in developing the region as a seafood hub,” Karlsen added. “We see opportunities for sustainable growth and future-oriented solutions that support regional development.”
The centre is led by Rebekka Andersen, who oversaw its establishment and said it aims to demystify the industry and promote greater understanding of its role in Northern Norway.
