Nofitech partners with Scottish builder for £49 million Bakkafrost hatchery

Norwegian land-based fish farming equipment supplier Nofitech has signed a deal with for Newburgh-based construction and engineering business, KR Group, for the supply of steel and cladding for the final phase of a Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) at Applecross in the Northwest Highlands.

The project, part of a £49 million investment by the Bakkafrost Scotland, is set to begin in the coming weeks at the Wester Ross site.

This is the third such deal signed by the two companues, and the three contracts have generated approximately £3 million for KR Group, according to a press release from the construction company on Monday.

Nofitech specializes in designing and building complete RAS facilities, which are closed, environmentally friendly systems that improve water usage efficiency and reduce the environmental footprint of fish farming.

Nicola Fraser, Business Director at KR Group, expressed pride in the company’s role in the project, noting the challenges of working through various weather conditions. Fraser highlighted the company’s commitment to sustainability, mentioning initiatives such as an on-site wormery, a rainwater harvesting system, and achieving carbon-neutral certification.

KR Group holds ISO 14001 and PAS 2060 accreditation and operates a sustainability division, KR Bon Reduction, which repurposes used composite panels and PIR boards. The division aims to repurpose over 200,000 square meters of panels by 2026.
