$500 million, 55-acre salmon farm to go ahead.
According to a story published in Maine Public on Tuesday, Nordic Aquafarms’ plans for a large land-based fish farm in Belfast have now received all the certifications necessary to proceed. This follows the granting of an Army Corps of Engineers permit on Monday.
Speaking about plans for the $500 million, 55 acre salmon farm, Nordic Aquafarms President Erik Heim said, “It has been a long and comprehensive process and we would like to thank all the hardworking permitting authorities that have been involved. They have dotted every I and crossed every T – the permits are robust. We are now the first fully permitted larger RAS project in Maine, and the most centrally located one.”
The project has, however, faced local opposition and the legality of the wastewater path is expected to be challenged in court.
