US tariff retreat eases pressure on transatlantic trade.
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre has welcomed US President Donald Trump’s decision to refrain from introducing new tariffs from 1 February, calling it a positive signal amid heightened trade tensions.
Speaking to NRK, Støre said the European response to proposed US tariffs had been unified and clear, and stressed that it had been important for Norway to state its position firmly.
Trump said on Wednesday evening that he would drop plans for punitive tariffs against NATO countries that had sent military reinforcements to Greenland. The announcement followed a meeting between Trump and Mark Rutte, the secretary general of NATO.
Støre said Norway supports handling the Greenland issue through dialogue between the United States and the Kingdom of Denmark, and that discussions on increased security in the Arctic should take place within the NATO framework.
