Benchmark Genetics names Kristian Botnen as chief executive.
Benchmark Genetics has appointed Kristian Botnen as chief executive, as the company prepares for its next stage of development under Novo Holdings’ ownership.
Botnen will take up the role on 3 November, moving from Akva Group where he led the supplier’s sea-based division in the Nordic region. Prior to that, he held senior roles at salmon farmer Lingalaks, including as general manager and production manager.
Benchmark Genetics has been without a permanent chief executive since May, when Geir Olav Mellingen stepped down. In the interim, Aleks Engel, a partner at Novo Holdings, has acted as CEO following Novo’s acquisition of the business from Benchmark Holdings in November 2024. Novo also bought lice laser company Stingray earlier that year.
Engel said the board saw Botnen’s appointment as an opportunity to strengthen the company’s long-term strategy.
“Kristian has a unique combination of commercial, operational and financial insight with deep industry knowledge. We are convinced that Kristian, together with the rest of the management team, will bring Benchmark Genetics into a new and exciting era, where it will be possible to produce food for the world in a more sustainable and efficient way using new genomic breeding technologies.”
Botnen said he looked forward to building on the company’s existing position.
“Benchmark Genetics has a very strong foundation with skilled employees, involvement in groundbreaking research, and a strong global presence,” he said. “I look forward to creating even greater value for our customers, contributing to the sustainability of the industry, and strengthening our position as a preferred partner.”
