China was fastest-growing market for Norwegian seafood exports in 2025, NSC says.
Norwegian Seafood Council said China was the fastest-growing market for Norwegian seafood exports by value in 2025, according to its new consumer trends report focused on the Chinese market.
The council said export value to China rose by NOK 2.9 billion (€266.8 million), or 31%, year on year to NOK 12.3 billion (€1.13 billion).
China moved from Norway’s sixth-largest seafood market in 2024 to third place in 2025, the report said.
The report, Seafood Trends 2026: The China Report, examines consumer behaviour and market trends shaping seafood demand in China, including rising middle-class spending, smaller households, convenience demand, health trends and supply chain shifts.
Sigmund Bjørgo, the council’s country director in China, said understanding Chinese consumer behaviour had become increasingly important following the market’s recent growth.
The council said China accounted for 78% of Norway’s Greenland halibut exports in 2025, 52% of redfish exports, 26% of cold-water prawns, 24% of haddock and 9% of mackerel.
The report also said Norwegian salmon remains closely associated with sashimi consumption in China.
