Norwegian aquaculture tech firms unite in OptoScale-Optimeering Aqua deal.

Trondheim-based OptoScale has announced the acquisition of fellow Norwegian technology firm Optimeering Aqua, the developer of the Bioplan production planning platform. The deal combines OptoScale’s AI-powered underwater imaging technology with Optimeering Aqua’s predictive modelling and decision-support systems.

OptoScale’s hardware and software solutions are used to monitor fish weight, welfare, and lice conditions in real time. Bioplan, which has been adopted widely in the aquaculture sector over the past decade, integrates growth, mortality, wound, and welfare predictions into planning tools designed to optimise harvest timing and production strategies.

Under the agreement, Optimeering Aqua’s Bioplan team will be integrated into OptoScale’s operations, with founder Erlend Torgnes continuing to lead the group. Customers will retain existing points of contact but gain access to a combined data and analytics offering, with both platforms being more closely integrated from autumn 2025.

OptoScale CEO Sven Kolstø said the acquisition would enable the combined business to provide “more than just data” by delivering “insights and recommendations based on deep industry experience.” Torgnes said access to OptoScale’s granular camera data would strengthen Bioplan’s modelling capabilities and allow for “better answers for customers and new possibilities to understand what’s happening in the pens.”

The companies said the deal responds to growing industry demand for integrated solutions that not only document production conditions but also predict developments and inform proactive measures.

Founded in 2016, OptoScale employs around 60 staff in Norway and Chile. Optimeering Aqua has been providing decision-support technology to the aquaculture industry for more than 10 years.
