Huon Aquaculture contracts Pure Salmon Technology for new smolt facility.
Tasmania-based Huon Aquaculture has awarded a contract to Norway’s Pure Salmon Technology for the design, supply, and installation of a new land-based smolt facility in the state, subject to regulatory approvals.
The facility will use recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) technology aimed at improving biosecurity, water efficiency, and fish health. Huon said the project will more than double its land-based capacity, allowing the company to grow larger smolt on land and reduce time at sea.
Construction is scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2025, with commissioning planned for 2027. Pure Salmon Technology has established an Australian office in connection with the project, led by Patrick Tigges as operations director.
Huon is one of the largest salmon producers in the Southern Hemisphere, while Pure Salmon Technology is part of 8F Asset Management’s portfolio.
