Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) supplier Optiras has announced its first commercial contract with land-based aquaculture company Baring Farsund for a facility in Southern Norway.
Baring Farsund obtained a license in 2022 to build a 24,000-metric-ton land-based facility for post-smolt and harvest-ready fish in Farsund, located in the far south of Norway.
The project involves an initial investment of NOK 300 million ($28 million), which will enable the facility to produce 1,200 tonnes of post-smolt annually. Future plans include potential expansion to produce market-ready salmon, with a total projected investment of NOK 4 to 5 billion ($374 million – $468 million) and the creation of around 100 jobs.
Baring plans a recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) using sea water drawn from deep-sea currents outside Farsund. Freshwater requirements will be partially met by desalination of sea water.
Optiras’ technology aims to ensure stable water quality and reduce energy consumption by over 50% compared to current solutions.
