Swedish aquaculture developer Ravdu has secured an environmental permit to build a land-based fish farm in Sunderbyn, near Luleå, paving the way for production of up to 10,000 tonnes of Arctic char annually.

The permit was granted by Sweden’s Land and Environment Court following a process that began in 2018. Ravdu is a wholly owned subsidiary of the regional agricultural organisation Hushållningssällskapet Norrbotten-Västerbotten.

The company said the facility has been approved under environmental requirements that include nitrogen treatment standards for Arctic conditions. Ravdu plans to begin with Arctic char production, although the permit also covers Atlantic salmon and rainbow trout.

The project will be developed in phases. An initial production capacity of 3,000 tonnes of Arctic char is planned, with full build-out reaching 10,000 tonnes per year.

According to the company, the facility could create around 60 direct jobs and occupy approximately 6.5 hectares of land in Sunderbyn.

Ravdu said it will now focus on securing the investment required to begin construction.
