At full capacity, the unit will house 2.4 million salmon, each weighing approximately half a kilogram, with harvest expected to commence in 2029.

Norwegian aquaculture startup Utror, owned by salmon producer Lovundlaks has revealed its plans for offshore salmon farming, sharing the first images of a new unit to be placed at Træna Bank off the Norwegian coast.

The unit measures 300 meters in length, 55 meters in width, and has a freeboard of 20 meters under normal operation.

The facility’s size, though substantial, is not the company’s primary concern, : “It’s big, but far from the biggest, and that doesn’t matter to us,” Lovundlaks wrote on Facebook.

The unit will produce salmon submerged, avoiding the harshest wave forces and areas with fewer lice. At full capacity, the unit will house 2.4 million salmon, each weighing approximately half a kilogram, with harvest expected to commence in 2029.

Utror plans to present the operating philosophy behind the project and its technology During the Aqua Next fair in Stavanger.
